Chapter 7
Finnick
Loud banging on the door to my apartment had me grumbling and shuffling my feet to go answer it. Garth stood on the other side, bearing a tray of coffees and a bag from the coffee shop around the corner. He held them up and I let him inside.
âYou look like shit, man,â he said once we were in the kitchen. He slid one of the paper cups to me, and I removed the lid to let the coffee cool. âHavenât seen you since the graveyard. There are some rumors going around about you.â
âYeah, and theyâre probably all true.â
I hadnât told anyone about being cursed, except the witches I went to for help. Figured theyâd spread the news since they all despised me for how Iâve acted over the years. Since meeting Beckett, working with herâwell, being yelled at by her, reallyâI saw how much of an ass I let myself become. How much I acted like Dion. It pissed me off, and Iâd been fighting with myself the last few days to prove I wasnât that bad of a guy.
I was failing that fight. I hardly slept, and the only time I didnât feel like shit was when I was around Beckett. Listening to her talkâand man could she talkâhelped remove me from my own problems. Listening to her rant while she worked fascinated me. Everything about that witch drew me in. Now I was left wondering if I was falling for her because of who she was or because thatâs just what I did. I found witches, got what I wanted, and then left them in the dust.
Because love didnât exist. I took a gulp of coffee without thinking and burned my tongue.
âAre you contemplating the meaning of the universe over there or what?â Garth asked. âTalk to me, Finnick. Whatâs going on with you?â
âI was cursed by Karina,â I said and set the coffee aside to run my hands through my messed-up hair. âNot much to tell after that. When I use my powers, I turn into a jackass.â
Garth didnât laugh. My other so-called friends wouldâve been rolling on the floor by now. Not Garth. Probably the only reason I liked him. âThatâs a bit harsh, and what, because you didnât love her back?â
âSomething like that. I shouldnât have laughed in her face when she said it, but a curse?â
âYou sure sheâs not after something else?â
I took one of the breakfast sandwiches he brought and unwrapped it. âWhat do you mean?â I asked in between bites.
âI mean sheâs part of that damned Blood Coven or whatever. Theyâre into some dark shit. Always hated the gods. This curse, itâs not stealing your power somehow, is it?â
âNot that I know of.â
Beckett hadnât said anything about my powers being sapped by the curse. She wouldâve let me know by now, I think. Then again, Beckett wasnât exactly the most powerful witch in the world. She was smart, though. How Harriet wasnât proud of her daughter baffled me. Beckett created new plants in her loft.
